I am delighted to see so many Welsh Conservative colleagues join the recently formed Conservative Union Research Group.
The Conservative Union Research Group is a group of seventy Conservative backbench MPs formed in July 2020 to support the government deliver its manifesto commitment to “strengthening the Union”. The group collectively believe that the Union of the United Kingdom is a potent force for good and are committed to ensuring it is fit for use in the 21st century.
With a resurgent nationalist movement in Scotland, and a Welsh Labour Government which has seemingly relishes grandstanding against the so-called ‘English’ Government throughout the coronavirus pandemic, we Conservatives can no longer take support for our precious United Kingdom for granted.
Throughout this pandemic, Wales has benefited enormously from the immense economic benefits derived from our membership of the United Kingdom.
Wales has benefitted from unprecedented support from the UK Government including the Coronavirus Job Retention Scheme, the Self Employment Income Support Scheme, Bounce Back Loans, Business Interruption Loans and even Eat Out to Help Out. That support has been replicated in every corner of the United Kingdom, as the UK Government aims to support all four nations through COVID-19.
Between now and next year's Senedd elections, we Conservatives must continue to proudly proclaim the economic and cultural benefits of this most special of political unions."
